While a text message can’t “cure” suicidal thoughts, it can remind someone of their worth and let them know they’re not alone in dark moments. But it can be tricky to know what to say — especially if you don’t understand what it’s really like to feel like you want to die.
That’s why we asked members of our mental health community to share real texts they received when they were feeling suicidal. We hope their real-life examples help inspire you if you’re struggling to find the “right” words to say to your loved one. And if you’re struggling with suicidal thoughts yourself, we hope these texts remind you how loved and valuable you are. We need you here.

Without further ado, here’s what our community members shared with us:
1. ‘I believe in you and the things you’re capable of doing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do and give.’
2. ‘Hey. I love you.’
3. ‘Believe in yourself.’
4. ‘You can withstand any storm and when you are too tired to stand, I will hold you up. You are never alone.’
5. ‘I love you just the way you are.’
6. ‘It’s OK to have those thoughts. I will be home soon. Please hold on, I love you.’
7. ‘You know I’m always here for you.’
8. ‘You’re allowed to have bad days, but remember tomorrow is a brand new day.’
9. ‘You’ve got a place here on Earth for a reason.’
10. ‘It’s OK to have suicidal thoughts. They’re just thoughts. But if they become overwhelming, I need you to call me, and I’ll be there.’
11. ‘You made it.’
12. ‘Everything is a season, and right now you’re in winter. It’s dark and cold and you can’t find shelter, but one day it’ll be summer, and you’ll look back and be grateful you stuck it out through winter.’
13. ‘I know you are going through a lot and you’re scared, but you will never lose me.’
14. ‘I know it feels like a lot right now. It’s OK to feel that way.’
15. ‘You are my rock. Let me be your boulder.’
16. ‘Is there anything I can do to make this day go easier for you?’
17. ‘You were on my mind this morning.’
